Specification of the ExScal Clean Point

(PDF)
Authored on 11/05/2004
This document describes the expected state of the hardware, middleware and application software for the 2004 ExScal clean point.

Project Echelon: OSU Team Kickoff

(PDF)
Authored By Dr. Vijay Raghavan on 01/00/2004
Surveillance of Long, Linear, Static Structures
  • Problem:
    • Too vast an area for limited personnel resources (mobile guards)
    • Hostile actions:
      • Destruction (explosives)
      • Damage to pumps and transformers
      • Stripping of copper power lines (for pumps)
  • Operational Need:
    • Reliable automated surveillance to detect movement in security zone

NEST Workshop on Extreme Scaling

(PDF)
Authored By Vijay Raghavan on 11/12/2003
To discuss the NEST plan to create a robust 10,000 node autonomous ad hoc sensor network in an operationally relevant environment for demonstrating the capabilities in the monitoring and protection of long linear structures, by the end of FY 2004.

Planned Requirements Progression

This spreadsheet shows the goals that must be reached at each step of the extreme scaling demonstrations.

ExScal Architecture:

ExScal Architecture Overview

(PDF)
Authored By Anish Arora on 08/15/2004
  • ExScal has a planned topology: A regular, hierarchical structure yields efficient coverage of an extended region.
  • ExScal operates by command and control: Tier 3 initiates, monitors, and regulates the operations of all Stargates
  • ExScal consists of multiple applications: each node comes equipped with a Trusted Base, a Deployment Application, a Localization Application and a Perimeter Security Application.
